The Man With The Golden Trumpet

My first teacher used to urge me all the time to listen to a trumpeter called Eddie Calvert. Mr Calvert was known as ‘The Man With The Golden Trumpet’ and achieved some massive hits, particularly with ‘Cherry Pink & Apple Blossom White’ and ‘Oh, Mein Papa.’

Eddie Calvert hailed from Preston, my home town. My father was also a fan, and actually remembers playing with Eddie in Preston Town Band, a local brass band. He was regarded for his rich, ‘golden’ trumpet sound. I have an old double album of his, on vinyl, which I still treasure.

I played for Preston Town Band myself, when I was a kid. I believe Eddie Calvert emmigrated to South Africa, where he subsequently retired and died. Incidentally, ‘Cherry Pink’ was released in Germany as ‘Rubber Mambo,’ for obvious reasons.
