JMW Turner – Many Happy Returns

Today is the birthday of one of the greatest Artists of all time, Joseph Mallord William Turner. (23 April 1775 – 19 December 1851)

Self-portrait by JM W Turner. Tate Britain.

Many happy returns Mr. Turner.

You don’t have to go to the amazing collection at Tate Britain to see a Turner. In Liverpool, we are well served for his astonishing work. Only yesterday, I was gazing at ‘Linlithgow Palace,’ ‘Venice’ and ‘Deal,’ in the Walker Art Gallery alone.

Linlithgow Palace - Turner

Deal - Turner

Liverpool’s other world famous Art Galleries are equally well stocked with pictures by what I regard to be the greatest impressionist painter of them all.

Rosenau - Sudley House

There are plenty of Turners at Lady Lever Gallery, Sudley House and also Liverpool University’s own Victoria Gallery & Museum has one, too. Tate Liverpool will are also getting in on the act by showing and exhibition of Turner, Monet and contemporary artis CyTwombli from 22 June – 28 October 2012. I can hardly wait.

  1. There are some marvellous Turners – especially at Port Sunlight. He is supposed to have painted the sunset from Waterlooville and Heswall.

  2. J. Edward Cox says:

Would anyone like to see a 1807 lost marine oil?
