Former Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra Principal Clarinet, Richie Hawley, was giving a masterclass on orchestral etiquette. He asked his colleagues in the CSO about how players should conduct themselves in the workplace. The responses may seem like common sense but it does no harm in revising these dos and don’ts! I remember taking part in a masterclass conducted by trumpeter Graham Ashton, who advised the assembled group of young, enthusiastic brass players, “… Nobody likes a pain in the *rse in this business!” Wise words indeed!!!

… The RLPO will be returning to work in two days, after a five week layoff. Perhaps I may make a ‘new season’s resolution’ to adhere strictly to Richie’s recommendations…
Richie Hawley is Professor of Clarinet at Rice University, Houston.
