It has been my pleasure to work with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales a lot in the past. A very fine orchestra! I received this post from clarinettist Walter Brewster. He has posted a fine collection of radio recordings of various orchestras on Youtube. This remarkable fragment is from a live broadcast of Richard Strauss’ epic Alpine Symphony. I’m not on this particular recording – I wish I was!
The conductor is the great Mariss Jansons…
Enjoy!
It has always been an absolute thrill to work for Mariss Jansons. He is in demand from all the world’s top orchestras. Strangely enough, I was one of the last people to work for his father, also a great conductor, Arvid Jansons. In 1984, he came to conduct the Chetham’s School Orchestra in Schubert Symphony no. 9 when I was a student. Sadly, he died on stage conducting the Halle orchestra later.
