This week is the 75th anniversary of the opening of Liverpool Philharmonic Hall. The famous home to the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra is celebrating by undergoing a major refurbishment and is closed until October while the extensive rebuild is taking place. This is the photograph of the building from the programme of the first concert, the day after the opening night.
The ‘new’ hall replaced the ‘original’ Liverpool hall which burnt down. The original hall had stood since 1849, nine years after the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Society was established in 1840.
