A Piece Of Trumpet History…

What a great photograph! My old trumpet teacher, David Mason pictured with Ralph Vaughan Williams and Sir Malcolm Sargent during rehearsals of Vaughan Williams 9th Symphony. The premiere of this work aroused a lot of interest, partly because of the use of saxophones but especially because of the 15 page solo flugel horn part. David Mason played the part at the premiere to great public acclaim. The RLPO played it a couple of years ago. I played the flugel part. It’s a lot of fun. Incidentally, my favourite recording of the piece is the BBC Symphony Orchestra with Anne McAneny playing the flugel part.
