Two Trumpet Legends…

Yesterday, I received the gift of a photo from the great John Gracie, recently retired Principal Trumpet of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. The picture shows John (left), as guest Principal with the Philharmonia, sitting next to the legendary David Mason, of Penny Lane fame. They are outside a hotel in Sicily whilst on tour.

A real piece of trumpet history!

John is still going strong, to say the least. I can personally testify to this, having been there in December when he played first trumpet in the stage brass band during Peter Maxwell Davies’ 9th Symphony. The performance was with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, only three weeks ago.

It was fabulous!

Incidentally, I studied trumpet with Professor David Mason for six wonderful years whilst at Chethams School of Music and the Royal College of Music..
